Shopify Checkout in 2026: What Has Changed

If you last looked at Shopify checkout customization before 2024, the landscape has changed significantly. The old checkout.liquid file, which previously allowed direct code edits to the checkout, is now fully deprecated.


Shopify completed the migration away from checkout.liquid in August 2025 for Plus stores. Standard plan stores have until August 2026 to migrate, though Shopify strongly recommends completing this before the deadline. Any store still relying on checkout.liquid customizations will lose those changes when the sunset date passes.


In its place, Shopify has built Checkout Extensibility, a framework with three core pillars:


  • Checkout UI Extensions allow you to add custom interface elements (upsells, trust badges, custom fields, banners) at specific target locations within the checkout
  • Shopify Functions let you change how the checkout behaves on the backend, including custom discounts, payment method filtering, shipping logic, and validation rules
  • Checkout Branding API provides granular control over colors, fonts, logos, corner radii, spacing, and other visual properties

These three tools work together to give merchants a secure, upgrade-safe way to customize every aspect of the checkout experience. Because extensions run in a sandboxed environment, they cannot access sensitive payment data or break the core checkout flow. This makes them more stable than the old checkout.liquid approach, where a single code error could prevent customers from completing purchases.


Another notable change for 2026: as of February 2026, Shopify no longer allows merchants to add background images to the checkout header or main content area. If you currently have a background image set, you can keep it but cannot change it. You can only remove it. This is part of Shopify's ongoing push toward a cleaner, more performance-focused checkout design.

Using the Checkout Editor

Target locations include areas above and below the order summary, after specific checkout steps, and within the payment and shipping sections.

  • Custom banners and messaging: Display promotional messages, shipping thresholds, or important notices contextually based on the cart contents

Target Locations

UI Extensions can only be placed at predefined target locations within the checkout. Shopify provides targets across the information step, shipping step, payment step, and order summary. You cannot place extensions anywhere you like, but Shopify has been steadily expanding the available targets with each platform update.


Key target locations include before and after the shipping method selection, above and below the payment method, within the order summary, and on the thank you and order status pages.


How to Add UI Extensions

For most merchants, the simplest route is to install a checkout app from the Shopify App Store that provides the extension you need. Once installed, you add the extension to your checkout through the checkout editor, exactly like adding a theme block.

Order Routing Functions control how orders are assigned to fulfillment locations after purchase, useful for brands with multiple warehouses or fulfillment partners.

Functions and Shopify Plus

Some Function types are available on all Shopify plans, while others require Shopify Plus. Discount Functions, for example, are available to all merchants, while Payment and Delivery Customization Functions are Plus-only.   • Spacing and layout: Adjust padding, margins, and spacing between checkout elements
  • Logo and header: Configure logo placement, sizing, and header layout with more precision than the visual editor allows

The Branding API is particularly useful for agencies and development teams managing multiple Shopify stores. It allows checkout branding to be version-controlled, replicated across stores, and updated programmatically. Testing and Optimizing Your Checkout
